NAME: Yuuki Konno
AGE: 15
CANON: Sword Art Online
NAME: Yuuki Konno
AGE: 15
CANON: Sword Art Online
CANON HISTORY: Here!
CANON PERSONALITY: When most people speak of Yuuki, they seem to be describing the perfect girl. Strong, brave, cheerful, earnest - the poor thing is always doing her best, no matter what odds are stacked against her.
Yuuki herself, however, would disagree. Though she holds the title of the “absolute sword” in her most recent online game adventure, Alfheim Online (henceforth referred to as ALO), she certainly does not consider herself to be particularly strong.
Living a life of hardship, she’s become used to hiding away her true feelings to the best of her ability. The treatments that went into keeping her alive, and the difficulties her family faced due not only to the medical bills, but also the stigma that came of having AIDS - even at a young age, she began to wonder about the value of her life. Her existence constantly caused nothing but trouble for those around her. What else could she do but try to endure it as well as she could?
Not that her ability was all that impressive. Over time, she did indeed learn how to maintain a cheerful smile no despite how poorly she felt, hiding her pains behind carefully prepared grins. But even that was not enough. At her core, Yuuki is someone who wears her heart on her sleeve, and her attempts to hide her true feelings often fall flat. With enough preparation, she can smile through an expected loss or grief - however, all too often, tragedy strikes when her guard is lowered, and it’s times like these when she finds herself struck speechless with all the eloquence of a deer in the headlights.
This is a trait that many of her friends and family have honestly picked up on. As a result, they often give her ample opportunities to dodge questions - something she is only too quick to take advantage of. If given a chance to lean on someone else and avoid answering anything uncomfortable herself, she will jump on the opportunity, no matter how guilty she feels. She is just not emotionally equipped to deal with certain heavy questions, much less in any way that will get her feelings across the way she wants to, and as a result, she’ll usually clam up at best and run away at worst.
That is... unless it comes down to a battle.
Thanks to MMOs, she’s found one way to express her feelings to others without having to struggle her way through words. A battle - not to the death, but simply a contest of swinging weapon against weapon with all of one’s might, with all of one’s feeling against the other’s. It’s through battle that she can be completely sincere, and it’s this that has also led to her mentality of forcing her way through situations where others may instead back off.
Her life is short; every moment is precious. And in order to ensure she gets her message across, sometimes she just has to butt heads with the people around her. Although she doesn’t want to hurt her loved ones, she has no qualms about offending people or doing anything less than following her own set of morals. She’ll do what she can to support her friends, but she couldn’t care less what others think of her overall. She has a great need to enjoy as much of her life as possible, to do as much with her life as possible. And if that also means grinning through as much of it as she can, she’ll do it.
This is what comes across most obviously to the people who meet her. She’s loud, excitable, and extremely enthusiastic, to the point where one may end up wondering just where she gets the energy for it all. She lives vivaciously, and she’s always got a word of encouragement for her friends when it comes to pulling through difficult times. She’s the one cheering mid-battle even while everyone’s exhausted from the fight, still raring and ready to go.
Yuuki is far from a leader type, despite being the leader of the guild Sleeping Knights. However, she does bring an undeniable sense of spirit to the group, constantly and tirelessly supporting her friends with all the cheer she can muster. Of course, cheer doesn’t really help without any direction, and this is another failure of hers: her indecisiveness. Problems that can be solved by charging in are easy enough to solve, but more delicate issues with complicated situations leave her stumped and frozen, unable to act. It’s times like these when she looks desperately to those around her for guidance, as she cannot act on her own.
This is not to say that she is stupid, by any means. Despite her situation, she possesses a healthy curiosity and continues with her studies independently. When asked what she wishes she could do with all of the various VR worlds at her fingertips, her strongest desire is to attend school. She longs for the mundane and the education she will never be able to get due to the need to remain isolated in the clean room for both the sake of her illness and also gathering data on the medicuboid.
Although she passed away content with her life and surrounded by her friends and loved ones (...and frankly, a good chunk of the ALO playerbase), her views on the preciousness of life and her determination to make the best of her existence isn’t likely to fade anytime soon.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
All of the following are abilities utilized in virtual reality, as she is a bedridden human in real life and barely gets any screentime irl.
Personal:
-Reaction speed; it’s so inhumanly fast, it may as well qualify. Where many people would take a hit because they don’t have time to block or dodge, Yuuki generally has the speed to manage those actions due to being more than likely the fastest character in ALO.
-Acrobatics; goes hand in hand with her speed. She has a sense for balance that allows her to perform all kinds of fun flips and maneuvers in the heat of battle.
Sword Skills; the ‘special attacks’ that make up the meat of physical combat in ALO. By taking on specific postures, the game system takes over and guides the movements of a player into multi-hit combos that end with a short cooldown period. Yuuki weaves these in with analogue attacks of her own. Some of these are headcanoned based on the fact that Yuuki is the strongest swordsman in ALO and would have surely learned them even if the novel itself only shows her using two onscreen; headcanon skills are marked with an *.
-Horizontal*; A simple sword skill slashing horizontally.
-Horizontal Arc*; A flat two-part skill that involves a horizontal swing from left to right, followed by another horizontal swing in from right to left.
-Horizontal Square*; A mid-level sword skill tracing the shape of a rhombus.
-Deadly Sins*; A seven hit skill that consists of various slashes, several full circle spins and a backwards somersault.
Howling Octave*; Five high-speed continuous thrusts then cut downward, upward, before another full force upward cut. 40% Physical, 60% Fire.
-Lightning Fall*; A heavy ranged attack that involves kicking off the ground with full force and then stabbing the sword into the ground, shooting out blue sparks in all directions. 30% Physical, 70% Lightning.
-Rage Spike*; A basic, weak skill that leaps at the enemy and follows with an upward strike.
-Savage Fulcrum*; A sword skill that traces the Arabic number "4" in the air. 50% Physical, 50% Ice.
-Sharp Nail*; Sword Skill that consists of an upward right to left diagonal slash, followed by a left to right horizontal slash, ending with a downward right to left diagonal slash. An alternative execution of the skills consists of three vertical slashes.
-Slant*; A simple sword skill slashing diagonally.
-Snake Bite*; A left and a right swings that target the opponent's weapon, with a chance of breaking the weapon.
-Sonic Leap*; A charge-type sword skill that dashes toward the enemy to deal a downward strike.
-Uppercut*; A simple sword skill delivering an uppercut.
-Vertical*; A simple sword skill slashing vertically.
-Vertical Arc*; A simple sword skill creating a 'V' shape trajectory.
-Vertical Square; A mid-level sword skill tracing the shape of a square.
-Mother’s Rosario; an 11 hit 1-handed sword skill that she created herself.
Racial:
-Flight; a power granted to all Player Characters in Alfheim Online, as they are all fairies. Her wings are a semi-transparent black and bat-like, although she can also hide them when they are not in use. Notably, she can fly using manual controls (that is, “feeling” and using her wings instead of using a joystick that appears for less skilled players.)
-Underground Flight; a specialty of those who chose the Imp race for their characters. Where most players can only fly where there is light, Imps continue to have some flight ability even underground. Translates as limited flight in enclosed areas.
-Wall Run; an ability of lightweight classes that allows them to run at such a speed, they are able to run on walls. The normal limit is 10 meters, but with Yuuki’s speed it’s probably closer to 30 meters before she drops.
-Night Vision; allows for sight even in near total darkness.
-Low-level healing spell; that’s literally all we get on it, but it can heal about 25% of someone’s HP apparently.

AU NAME: Yuuki Ouma
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Here. She’s about 5’1”.
AU HISTORY:
✢ Grew up in a small American town with her older brother Kokichi (
decipere) who she is very close to! They come from a fairly rich family and live comfortable lives.
✢ As a child, she was much shyer than her older brother with a tendency to hide behind him when meeting new people or encountering new situations. She still has shades of that timidity nowadays and will do the exact same thing if she's off her game, but she's grown to be overall more outgoing, at least on the surface. She's extremely cheerful and optimistic with a slightly mischievous streak, thanks to Kokichi.
✢ When she was around 13, she became ill with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. She grew to keep smiling for her family members because of how worried they were for her health, and started playing a lot of online games with Kokichi and later, others.
✢ This is because during her time hospitalized, Kokichi started up a guild called Vivarium to play with her even when he couldn't be there himself. One of the guild's special rules is to wear a mask in a certain style to keep anonymous- something that helped Yuuki get past her shyness when it came to meeting others. As a result, she met Elliot (
fiddlestick) and Eren (
usurpers) through these games, although they later left the guild.
✢ She had two months of intensive chemotherapy followed by two years of maintenance treatments. As of age 15, nearly 16, she’s been cancer-free.
✢ The guild remained active this entire time. The guild doesn't specifically center itself around one game anymore and it has generally just become an online group where people can have fun interacting with one another. She occasionally streams video games with Kokichi while in their Vivarium masks and often does charity runs so they could donate the proceedings to any group that helps sick children.
✢ She is a very studious girl who not only kept up on her homework while hospitalized, but grew to have aspirations in creating hardware for games that made them more accessible to those with illnesses or disabilities. The games got her through a lot, so she now seeks to make it possible for other children suffering from illness or handicaps the same entertainment that comes with games. As such, she's studying robotics at Recollé University, having moved into the city for that express purpose at the end of August 2018.
✢ They also mail out glitter bombs. That's just. A service they provide from their online shop. Deliver glittery justice upon your foes today!
✢ She's only recently moved into Recollé herself at the beginning of the school year and currently shares an apartment with her brother, Kokichi. As such, she's newer to the area, but eagerly checking out the new places and meeting new people.
AU PERSONALITY:
Although she does have leadership qualities, in the end Yuuki tends to look to those who are stronger and wiser than herself for support. In this life, that was Kokichi, and his influence has made for a much more mischievous girl who gets laughs from harmless pranks on others just as her big brother does. She takes glee in a well done joke, even if she groans at Kokichi’s at the appropriate moment. This Yuuki is one who has made a whole persona of a mischief-making, “evil” alter-ego who goes on about wicked surprise schemes that are really just charity streams. It’s a role she approaches with all the energy and liveliness she can muster, and given she’s excitable on a normal day, that’s quite a lot.
Outside of her online persona, she’s fairly well-adjusted. No longer wearily battling illness and coping with an impending death, so much less of her cheer is a front. She’s a genuinely friendly, cheerful, and optimistic girl who’s got her whole life ahead of her, and she’s got all kinds of plans for making the most of it. There are less pains that need to be hidden away behind smiles, and accordingly less reason to hide behind others while she gathers her willpower to keep marching forward. This Yuuki is one who is in a position where she can sprint ahead without much trouble.
Where the original Yuuki had a complicated relationship with her parents, particularly her mother due to her family’s religious beliefs, this Yuuki has much less trouble there. Her parents are loving, if exasperated with their children’s antics, but that’s about all the strain that can be seen; this Yuuki is accustomed to a secular life, and although her life has been difficult, it doesn’t cause her to struggle against her faith as the original did.
Yuuki remains a studious sort, although thanks to her recovery, she’s been able to rejoin classes and really think about what she wants to do with her future. This Yuuki is one who doesn’t want to just passively support those suffering from illness and disease and has decided to pursue her own path to helping improve the quality of life for others. Where the original Yuuki planned to donate as much money as possible to charities upon her death, this is a Yuuki who has the life and ability to actively help those she sees in need. Though she will still correct anyone who tries to say she’s doing something great (she’s still studying, she’s nowhere amazing yet), she does not have the many hangups her original self did regarding her perceived weakness and powerlessness due to her illness. She doesn’t like taking credit where she feels it’s undue, but she does recognize the importance of the work she’s looking to do.
Since she’s not fighting desperately to live another day, this Yuuki is also much less confrontational than her past life counterpart. Where the original Yuuki would express her feelings through battling others and butting heads, this one makes much more effort to verbalize herself, although she is not necessarily any better at it. She doesn’t feel a pressing need to get all her feelings out right this second, and works harder to make herself understood more peaceably to preserve relationships where her original decidedly didn’t have time to bother.
